Electric Cars That Can Go 400 Miles in 2022

One of the biggest worries that car owners have when it comes to switching to an electric vehicle is range anxiety. This is the fear that you may run out of power before reaching your destination. Currently, the longest-range electric cars can go about 400 miles.

Most average 200 – 300 miles on a single charge. This is often enough as not many drivers need that much on a day-to-day basis. However, with charging infrastructure still under development, many people want to stay safe. This means going for the longest-range electric vehicles.

Whether you’re visiting friends and family or going on vacation, no one wants to find themselves stuck on the road with no charge. There are only three EVs available on the market today that can go 400 miles. Others are yet to be released. There are, however, many more than can go more than 200 and 300 miles.

Here’s a breakdown of electric vehicles with the longest range.

1. Lucid Air Dream Edition R


Lucid Motors started shipping its EVs to customers in October 2021. Its lineup is quite impressive, especially for a first-time automaker offering luxurious alternatives to the regular electric vehicles we have.

Not all Lucid Airs are available on the market at the moment and below is what the company offers in terms of range.

The entry-level Air Pure uses a single electric motor that powers the rear wheels. All the other models in the lineup use dual electric motors for all-wheel-drive. Lucid currently offers the longest range on the market depending on the model you pick.

InsideEVs did a 70-mph range test with the Lucid Air Dream Edition R. It is estimated to deliver 520 miles on a full charge when equipped with the 19” Aero wheels. When you fit 21” wheels, the range reduces to 481 miles.

The team at InsideEVs went with the former configuration and achieved 500 miles. The first 25% of the battery’s charge achieved 120 miles, while the next three-quarters gave them 128, 126, and 126 miles respectively.

They even got 6 miles out of the Air when the charge was at zero. Out of all the 118 kWh provided by the battery, they were able to use 117+ kWh. It only fell short of its EPA range estimate by 4%. It’s safe to say that the Lucid Air Dream Edition R could actually be the longest-range electric car today.

Unfortunately, it’s a limited production model that is already fully booked. According to the Lucid website, you can still join the waitlist for the Air Grand Touring which promises to deliver 516 miles on a full charge.

On average, it takes 37 minutes to charge a Lucid Air Dream Edition from 0% to 80%. It takes an average of 45 minutes to get it to 100% after that. It’s the first EV to take more than 300 kW, according to a test done by Tom Moloughney from InisdeEVs.

Overall, it’s the best electric car available at the moment. There’s no electric car that can do what the Air can. Everyone has been talking about it and most users are very happy with their deliveries.

2. Mercedes EQS 450+


The Mercedes EQS 450+ comes with a 453-mile range on paper. It’s the electric version of the S-Class. Its elongated wheelbase provides enough room for a 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery – one of the largest you’ll currently get on sale today after the Lucid Air’s.

The EQS is something close to a limo. It comes with a single electric motor that powers the drive wheels. This churns about 329 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque. Edmunds tested the car in a real-world driving loop to see how far it can go on a single charge.

The EPA had estimated that the battery pack could only achieve about 350 miles. The team at Edmunds discovered that while weighing about 5,069 pounds, the car can achieve 422 miles in the real world.

This is 72 miles more than the EPA estimate. Quite impressive if you compare how other EVs fare in the real world. The test lasted 12 hours and went on until there were no more miles left in the EQS.

With a level 2 charger, the car’s battery achieves full capacity with 20 hours of charging. This will get you 422 miles as tested. The best part about it all is that it doesn’t cost you any more to charge than the average electric car.

The Mercedes EQS 450+ is currently in second place when counting electric cars that can go 400 plus miles. You will have to part with $102,310 to get your hands on the base EQS model without any options. It’s an industry leader in terms of amenities, comfort, and tech.

3. Tesla Model S


The latest version of the Tesla Model S achieves 405 miles depending on the configuration you choose. There are two trims available – the Tesla Model S and the top-of-the-line Tesla Model S Plaid.

With 19” wheels, the Model S has an estimated range of 405 miles. Tesla claims that if you switch to the 21” wheel setup, the range drops to 375 miles. The Plaid trim has a range of 396 miles according to EPA, but boasts the quickest acceleration in the industry today.

Its improved battery architecture enables flawless track runs with no performance lag. With 1,020 horsepower, it gets from 0-60 mph in 1.99 seconds on paper. Tesla had included a Model S Plaid+ within its lineup but it has far been removed from the website.

The car was to offer a range of about 520 miles, but Elon Musk said that the regular Plaid is still good enough. This might be a sign that Tesla may produce more electric cars that can go more than 400 miles in the near future.

It takes anywhere between six and 15 hours to charge a Tesla to full capacity using a third-party or home charger. With Tesla’s Supercharger, you can get up to 200 miles in about 15 minutes. Expect 25 minutes up to full capacity. Level 1 chargers take the longest, with the average taking 20-40 hours to charge a Tesla. The 2022 Tesla Model S starts at $89,990 while the Model S Plaid starts at $129,990.

Rivian R1T Max Pack


Rivian is another new entrant into the electric car market. It is widely known for its all-electric truck – the R1T. It has had another product in the lineup – an all-electric SUV called R1S.

The two vehicles come with battery systems that deliver between 260 and 400+ miles of range depending on the motor they are paired with. A “Standard Pack” starts off with a 260-mile range.

Customers can choose the dual-motor “Large Pack” option with 320 miles or the “Max Pack” package that promises 400 miles on a single charge. The higher you go, the more expensive it becomes.

The R1T is big on power and offers more than 800 horsepower. It can get from 0 to 60 mph in just about 3 seconds when powered by a dual-motor and max pack configuration. There is no Max Pack for the R1S SUV.

It’s only available with the Standard Pack that delivers 260+ miles or the Large Pack that has an estimated EPA range of 316 miles. Customer deliveries have been pushed to 2023 both for the pickup and SUV, especially for vehicles with the biggest Max battery.

This means that you’ll have to wait a bit longer before getting a Rivian that can offer more than 400 miles. Tests will also confirm whether the truck is worth including on this list. Meanwhile, the manufacturer is working on a Rivian Adventure Network that will include nationwide fast chargers that can add 140 miles in just 20 minutes.

The R1T all-electric pickup truck starts at $67,500 while the R1S all-electric SUV starts at $72,500. The demand for the R1T is pretty high but production is slow. The average wait time is about 2 years, but it’s good to note that 920 vehicles were delivered before the end of last year.

Electric Cars That Can Go 300+ Miles

While there are very few electric cars that can go 400 miles and above, there are many more than that offer 300+ miles. Some are available at a lower price point and are a great alternative to anyone who feels that a 300-mile range is still adequate.

This group contains the highest number of cars. 200 miles of range seems to be the sweet spot for most car manufacturers. It’s also where many automakers start off before joining the 300 and 400 miles groups of electric cars.

Final Thoughts

The race to produce the best and longest-range electric cars is tight. Many if not all car manufacturers are shifting from gasoline-powered models pretty fast. Most have promised to release dozens of models in the next two to three years.

At the moment of writing this article, the Lucid Air Dream Edition R provides the best range at 500 miles when tested at an average speed of 70 mph. It is closely followed by the Mercedes EQS 450+ with 422 miles. There aren’t that many electric cars that can go 400 plus miles.

Things will, however, not stay this way for long. Another entrant will soon show up to give Mercedes and Lucid a run for their money. We wait to see what manufacturers have in store as electric cars slowly become the mainstream mode of transportation.
